Description Wallsend Health Centre, designed in the late 1930s, is a good example of a modernist interwar health centre. While architecturally fairly modest, as one would expect for a building of this date and type, consideration has gone into its carefully detailed elevations and a design that incorporates the use of good quality materials throughout. The Art Deco influence includes strong geometry, crisp symmetry and characteristic elements such as fluted motifs, hexagonal features and stepped parapets. The building comprises a double-height central waiting hall embellished with engaged Art Deco columns and caps and a stepped parapet, surrounded by lower flat-roofed blocks with elevations stepped back and forward to enliven the composition. The consistent use of mellow brown brick contrasts with the bright white of the pointing, and visual emphasis is achieved by the use of vertical brick and Portland stone bands. The side and rear elevations are similarly well detailed and unified by the use of vertical brick bands and window heads, with bands of Portland stone identical to those of the main elevation. The east and west entrances have Portland stone mouldings including engaged round columns, and the heavy-panelled timber doors have metal-framed overlights with glazing bars arranged in a herringbone pattern around a central hexagon. The west entrance has a prominent loggia with a colonnade of octagonal brick and tile columns. The Art Deco influenced exterior is also continued to some degree within the interior, through the use of stepped door cases to the two main entrances, hexagonal columns with fluted capitals in the central hall and shaped door architraves to the south corridor. Further stylistic continuity with the exterior is maintained through the incorporation of features, such as glazed double doors with hexagonal heads to the courtyard and elements of the original decorative scheme to the entrance vestibule and corridors.
