Notes ANCROFT HAGGERSTON NU 04 SW 10/36 The Italian Garden including walls and features GV II House and walled garden. Early C20 for Thomas Leyland. Garden wall roughly-dressed stone lined in English Garden Wall Bond. Brick west wall lined in snecked stone. House and arbour. ashlar with Lakeland slate roof. Wrought-iron gates. Large square garden with tall Rococo style double gates in south-east corner. Small panelled doorway in north-east corner is flanked by 4 wood panels of naturalistic open-work carving. Arbour against centre of east wall with 4 Roman Doric columns. House set against north wall. Single storey, 3 bays with moulded plinth and rusticated quoins. Pedimented centre bay, originally an open temple front, has two Roman Doric columns in antis; triglyph frieze. Flanking round- headed windows with radiating glazing bars. Hipped roof. Keyed Venetian windows on returns. Garden west wall has large segmental apse with 6 round-headed niches separated by broad flat pilasters. Little Lakeland slate roof over. Interior of house has 2 naturalistic plaster ceilings with vines growing through trellises. Also contemporary doors and wood panelling. , Facts
