Notes THIRSTON WEST THIRSTON NU 10 SE 1/69 Peth Foot 20.10.69 GV II House, dated 1617 but incorporating earlier fabric, remodelled and extended C19. Rubble (front rendered) with dressings; rear wing brick with stone dressings; slate roof. Front 2 storeys, 5 bays, irregular. Old door of diagonally-set oak boards in bay 2, under flat-pointed arch in square frame, and stepped hoodmould. Sunk panel in moulded surround above, with inscription: ANNO DOMINI 1617 PRO(VERBS 24) VER(SE 3) THR(OUGH) WISD OM (IS A) HOV SE BVILDED (AN) (D) WITH (UNDE)R DING STAN (I)T IS ESTABLISHED Relief lettering, the last 2 lines cut on the door lintel. Late C19 sash windows in cement surrounds. Rendered ridge and end stacks. Left return shows 1st floor opening, now glazed but perhaps originally a door, with chamfered surround and hoodmould. Early C19 wing to left. Rear elevation shows round-headed stair window with radial glazing and former 2-light mullioned window, above roof of later outshut. Interior: South end wall of 2.6 metres and an internal cross wall of similar thickness on north of entrance passage suggest the existence of a medieval tower. Blocked chamfered door on south of entrance passage. Mid C18 stair with panelled newel post, moulded grip handrail and column-on-vase balusters; similar stair-head balustrade. , Facts
